Tooth extractions are common dental procedures, but proper aftercare is crucial for a smooth recovery. At The Art of Dentistry in Lilburn, Georgia, Dr. Moosa Dalwai and his team want to ensure your healing process is as quick and comfortable as possible. These expert aftercare tips can minimize discomfort and avoid complications while promoting optimal healing.
It’s normal to experience some bleeding after your tooth extraction. To manage this, gently bite down on a piece of gauze that your dentist provides. This will help apply pressure and slow the bleeding. You can place new gauze every 30 minutes or so as needed. If the bleeding persists for over a few hours, contact our office for advice.
Resting is one of the most important aspects of your recovery. In the first 24-48 hours, avoid physical exertion, including exercise or any heavy lifting. Excessive movement can disrupt the blood clot and hinder healing. Resting allows your body to focus on healing, ensuring the best outcome for your recovery.
Pain is common after tooth extraction but can be managed effectively. Your dentist may recommend over-the-counter pain relievers such as ibuprofen or acetaminophen. If stronger pain medications were prescribed, follow the instructions carefully. Make sure you take the medication as directed to avoid discomfort and to help reduce inflammation during recovery.
Eating soft foods is essential in the first few days following your extraction. Choose easy-to-eat options like yogurt, mashed potatoes, scrambled eggs, and soups. Hard, crunchy, or spicy foods should be avoided, as they may irritate the extraction site or become lodged in the wound. Additionally, stay hydrated by drinking plenty of water—but be careful not to use a straw, as the suction can dislodge the blood clot and lead to a dry socket.
While keeping your mouth clean during recovery is important, you must be gentle around the extraction site. Refrain from brushing the area for the first 24 hours to avoid disturbing the wound. After that, you can resume brushing, but be careful near the extraction site. To help keep the area clean, rinse your mouth with a warm saltwater solution (1/2 teaspoon salt in a glass of warm water) several times a day, especially after eating, to reduce the risk of infection.
Most extractions heal without issues, but being aware of potential complications is important. If you experience increased pain, excessive swelling, pus, or a foul taste in your mouth, these could be signs of infection or dry socket. If these symptoms arise, contact our office immediately for further evaluation and care.
