Fluoride Treatment

The truth about fluoride therapy: We embrace its natural and safe cavity-fighting power!

Fluoride is a powerful ally in our fight against destructive tooth decay at The Art of Dentistry. While this naturally occurring mineral can be found in water supplies and other foods and products, there may be situations that call for professional fluoride supplementation at our office.

When in the capable hands of our dentist, Dr. Moosa Dalwai, we ensure that just the right amount of fluoride is safely applied to keep the teeth strong. Amounts vary depending on factors such as the age of the patient who is benefiting from this professional, preventative treatment.

What is fluoride?

Fluoride is a natural cavity-fighter. It is present in trace amounts in water and some fruits and grains. Fluoride may also be fortified in oral care products, such as toothpastes, and in other consumer goods. The amount of fluoride in water supplies and the goods that you buy at the store or online is closely regulated, so it remains at a safe level.

What are the benefits of fluoride?

Your teeth are covered in enamel. This protective covering is incredibly strong. In fact, enamel is the strongest part of your body. However, no tissue or body part is impervious to damage. Enamel may become damaged or eroded due to progressive disease. The acids that are produced by bacterial plaque break down the natural structure of the teeth. Without treatment, decay causes areas of deteriorated tissues (or cavities). To stop the decay process, a cavity must be treated with restorative dentistry services, such as a dental filling. We emphasize preventing disease, which then renders treatments like fillings unnecessary. Fluoride therapy is an important part of preventative dentistry in that it helps to support the strength of the teeth and remineralizes or repairs weakened teeth.

How is fluoride applied?

The Art of Dentistry may recommend fluoride supplements as a complement to strong and consistent home care techniques and products. For instance, Dr. Dalwai may advise on fluoride toothpaste for your child. All it takes is a pea-sized amount of toothpaste for younger children. It is also important to monitor your young children to ensure they do not eat or swallow large amounts of toothpaste. While overdosing on these products is very rare, it is possible with all kinds of healthcare aids.

Fluoride therapy can also be easily incorporated into your child’s regular dental check-ups. It may be applied as a gel, foam, varnish, or in other formulations. We even provide a twist on standard fluoride in the form of Silver Diamine Fluoride. SDF contains additional ingredients that help to kill harmful bacteria and that also support maximum effectiveness. Last, but certainly not least, fluoride in its many forms is not only appropriate for sensitive teeth—it also helps to relieve painful sensitivity. Heightened sensitivity may be indicative of enamel damage. By building up the minerals that contribute to the strength of your teeth, we stop the decay process (and associated symptoms) in its tracks.
