Are you dreading an upcoming tooth extraction? You’re not alone. It may help to know that dental extractions are routine procedures today and nothing to fear. Whether you’re extracting a damaged tooth or an impacted wisdom tooth, we’ve got you covered at The Art of Dentistry. Dr. Moosa Dalwai and our team offer safe, painless extraction services to our Lilburn, Georgia, patients. We’ll also monitor your healing afterward to ensure you have a smooth, successful recovery.
The following tips from our dental team can help expedite your tooth extraction recovery:
The extraction site will be vulnerable to infection and tissue damage after your procedure, so it’s important to treat this area with TLC. Don’t brush near the site, rinse or spit for the first few days after your procedure to avoid complications with your recovery. Don’t drink with a straw, as it can dislodge the blood clot that forms at the extraction site to aid with your healing.
Rest as much as you can for the first few days after your extraction to give your body time to heal. Avoid running, biking, swimming, playing contact sports, or other strenuous activities that may be a normal part of your routine. Read a book, catch up on your favorite TV series, take naps, or warm baths for relaxation to promote quicker healing.
Dr. Dalwai will use anesthesia to keep you comfortable for your extraction procedure. Once the anesthesia wears off, you may experience some soreness and pain. These symptoms can be managed with prescription or OTC pain medication. Be sure to take this medication as instructed to aid with your healing. We may also prescribe antibiotics to prevent infection during your recovery.
Swelling around the extraction site is also normal after a tooth extraction. You can apply ice packs to your cheek at 15 – 20 minute intervals throughout the day to help manage inflammation and discomfort.
Adopt a liquid or soft food diet during your initial recovery to avoid the discomfort of chewing. Choose healthy food like soups, scrambled eggs, yogurt, puréed veggies, smoothies, etc., that will help with your healing. Drink plenty of water to stay hydrated, but don’t use a straw.
Smoking and alcoholic drinks increase your risk of complications that can impede your recovery. Smoking can interfere with the formation of the extraction site blood clot, which can delay your healing.
Be sure to attend all follow-up checkups, even if you’re feeling better. These appointments are essential to monitoring your long-term healing and the future state of your oral health.
